The story is that there are a few differences between American roulette, European roulette and the old French roulette. The differences are subtle, but they can affect how a night in the casino goes around the world.
We all love a night on the roulette table or even a few turns on an afternoon when we’re feeling lucky. The French invented the game in the 18th century, so it is said, but it is now played all over the world, and no casino is complete without a roulette table, even an online casino.
What type of roulette do you like to play, or are you a newcomer, looking to find out a bit more about this classic casino game?
Let’s take a bit of a closer look at the three styles of roulette.
What is American Roulette all about?
American roulette is an exciting way to play this classic casino game. We all know the scene in the Hollywood movies – the wheel, the chequered table layout and the players in tuxes and gowns sipping cocktails. It’s what we all think of when we imagine a game of roulette.
American roulette has 38 numbers on the wheel, and this is a big difference from the other two styles of the game. You have the usual 1 to 36 numbers on the wheel, but you have a 0 and a 00 too.
The addition of the 00 increases the House Edge up to 5.7%, which puts a lot of Irish roulette players off this version. On the other hand, the 00 adds another challenge to players, and the skilled, experienced player may enjoy trying to beat the house.
Roulette reached America in the 19th century when the French brought it to New Orleans and onto the gambling boats that sailed the Mississippi.
The Americans added the Green 00, and the casinos never looked back.
Why not play European Roulette?
Why not indeed play European roulette at a local casino or when on a weekend away with the lads? Many the online casino offers European roulette, and the odds are in your favour.
The big difference between European roulette and American roulette is that there is just the single 0 on the wheel, not an additional 00, which the American tables have on their ones.
The single 0 reduces the house edge and, in theory, gives the punter a better chance of having a winning time at the roulette table. The higher return to player percentage is attractive, as is the 2.7% house edge, half of that of the American roulette.
Though known as European roulette, the game is actually the standard version of roulette played around the world, outside of the US, even though you can play it in some American casinos, too.
How about French roulette?
French roulette is like European roulette in that it has the single 0, and they, too, leave the 00 to the Americans to play. The single 0 reduces the house edge, and the French roulette reduces it further with the addition of an extra option when playing.
The French roulette has what is known as the ‘La Partage’ option, which can cut the house edge odds down to 1.35%, not a bad option when looking to win some money with roulette.
La Partage means that if you make any even money bet, one on red, black, odd, even, 1 – 18 or 19 – 36, and the ball lands on the zero, then you will get half the stake money back.
If you wanted to, when playing French Roulette, you can choose to ‘Imprison‘ the bet. With Imprison, you lock in the La Partage bet, instead of taking half your bet back, and on the next spin, if the original bet wins, then you get all the stake back, but without the winnings, of course.
Some casinos offer different versions of La Partage and the Imprison play, but they all come down to house rules.
The French invented roulette, and the name is actually French for ‘little wheel.’ The French little wheel became very popular very quickly, spreading throughout the world in only a few years.
Today, you can play roulette in casinos anywhere in the world and, of course, anytime at an online casino of your choice.
