Who doesn’t love a good superstition? Our casino superstitions dictate when we go to the casino, what games we play and even who we play with on some nights. Irish casino players have their fair share of superstitions, like who doesn’t knock on wood before laying a bet?
We all have our superstitions, but do they really make a difference? We have our players at Premier Casinos in Cork, Dublin, and Tralee, who believe they do. Many of us know our luck is in if we do everything just right on the night.
Let’s take a look at casino superstitions from around the world, as well as a few closer to home.
Getting the right seat at the roulette
Getting the right seat at the roulette table is a must for most casino players. You’ll see them every night waiting and looking at the roulette table, just waiting for their seat to come free.
They’ll be sitting at the slots or playing one of the other machines, but with one eye on the roulette table, watching it like a hawk. When the person sitting at their seat gets up to leave, they slide in, ready for a night of fun at the roulette table.
Casino goers in Ireland might blame their seat for bad luck and will turn it at another angle to push the luck in the other direction.
I had a friend who would turn the chair upside down when losing, but whether it turned his luck, I can’t remember.
Avoiding the unlucky numbers
Avoiding the unlucky numbers is another popular superstition for casino goers. Some people avoid the number 13 because it is unlucky, others won’t go out on the 13th of the month or play 13 on the roulette table.
Of course, Friday the 13th is another day most people avoid, but funnily enough, the odd person thinks 13 is a lucky number and love a gamble on Friday 13th. Who knows?
In Chinese culture, four is seen to be an unlucky number as it sounds like death in their language. Many Chinese people never play four on the roulette table or on the other machines in the casino.
In Ireland, many casino goers will avoid the number 13 too and will walk away from the slots or the roulette after playing 12 rounds.
The unlucky colours superstition
The unlucky colours superstition is huge among all gamblers. They will not be seen out in a blue shirt, a red one or whatever colour is the unlucky one and definitely not at the casino.
Some players won’t go into a casino if the carpet is not the right colour or if the walls are painted the wrong shade of green.
We can be a bit odd with our superstitions, and even the wrong colour socks can be too much for some of us.
Of course, in Ireland, green is a lucky colour and most Irish casino members love a green carpet or a green door.
Oddly enough, playing against someone with red hair is seen as unlucky in Ireland, which is a strange superstition considering so many of us have red hair.
Not counting your money
Not counting your money is an old superstition that still lives on today. There can be good reasons for this one, as you could be seen to be greedy or showing off by counting your winnings in front of everyone else.
Some people believe counting your money brings bad luck and is the first step in losing it all again.
No one in Ireland likes it when another player counts their money, and you can be sure bad luck will follow that person for a while afterwards.
No, it is best to keep your winnings to yourself and not to attract too much attention when in the casino, having fun.
As Kenny Rogers sang, “there’ll be time enough for counting when the dealin’ is done”
Knocking on wood
Knocking on wood is a very Irish casino superstition, though you will hear it in casinos around the world. People will knock on wood when entering a casino or every time they place a casino machine, just in case.
We’re not sure where this tradition came from, but some people say knocking on wood scares off the bad spirits, the ones that bring the bad luck, and so many people knock on wood before every game.
Of course, you might not always have a piece of wood handy, which is why you’ll see some people knocking on their heads before rolling the dice in a casino.
Whistling in the casino
Whistling in the casino is another very old superstition and one that is followed even today in Irish casinos and in most casinos around the world.
A true gambler will not whistle while playing in the casino. They might sing a bit of a song or hum the chorus of a favourite tune between games, but no one will whistle when in the casino.
The whistling in the casino superstition comes from the days of sail when sailors feared whistling would attract strong winds and storms.
No one wants a stormy night in the casino.
Keeping a winning streak going
Keeping a winning streak going is full of superstitions and superstitious activity. What the person does may not make sense to others, but it makes perfect sense to the one on the winning streak.
Some people will not shave while they are doing well at the casino. Others won’t go for a haircut or trim their beard if they are winning well most nights. You’ll see some lads in the same t-shirt for days on end if they are going well, and some will wear the same shoes too.
There was a fellow in our casino who did not wash while on a winning streak, but someone had to have a word with him after a few days.
Don’t go in the front door of the casino
Ever wonder why some casinos have two doors, or you have to go through one door and then another one before you get to play the casino games?
The superstition of not going in the front door of the casino is probably an Asian one, but it has spread to Europe and Ireland, too.
It is believed you might rub off someone coming out the front door and catch their bad luck for the night.
Many people will look for the back door or the side door before going into a casino, and some will not go in at all if there is only the one door.
Wearing a lucky charm
Wearing a lucky charm is a popular Irish casino superstition and one that is copied around the world.
You’ll often see an Irish person with a charm tied onto a watch strap or someone with a charm bracelet or necklace in a casino.
The Irish lucky charms might be a four-leaf clover, a holy medal, or a miniature horseshoe. Many people might have a charm associated with their mother, or maybe a present from their mother on the charm bracelet.
A clean handkerchief in the pocket, never used, is thought by many to be a lucky charm.
Blessing yourself
Blessing yourself or saying a small prayer is very popular with Irish casino goers. Next time you are in an Irish casino, take a look around and you will see people blessing themselves before throwing a dice or when playing the roulette table.
An Irish person in a casino might look up to the ceiling before playing a game, but we all know they are saying a little prayer to heaven, looking for the good luck.
You might see an Irish person in the casino knocking on wood, blessing themselves and saying a wee prayer all at the same time – having all their casino superstitions on the go before playing.
